Origins & Development
The exchange system was originally developed in 1950 by the American Diabetes Association, the American Dietetic Association, and the U.S. Public Health Service as a meal planning tool for people with diabetes. It has since evolved into a comprehensive nutrition management system used worldwide.
How It Works
Foods with similar nutritional profiles are grouped together into "exchanges." One exchange of any food in a group provides roughly the same amount of carbohydrates, protein, fat, and calories as any other food in that same group, making substitutions simple.
Why It's Effective
Unlike restrictive diets, the exchange system teaches portion awareness and balanced eating patterns. Research shows it's particularly effective for long-term weight management, blood sugar control, and developing a healthy relationship with food.

1 exchange = 12 grams of carbohydrates, 8 grams of protein, 8 grams of fat
• 30g hard cheese
• 250ml milk
• 175ml yogurt
